The Berks County Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Program in partnership with the Berks County Suicide Prevention Task Force will dedicate a park bench at Gring’s Mill Recreation Area, part of the County of Berks Park System, promoting suicide awareness during National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Additional park benches, a total of six, in recognition of Suicide Awareness will be located along the walking trail of Tulpehocken Creek.
In 2018, 61 people in Berks County lost their lives to suicide. To date, in 2019, 32 individuals have lost their lives to suicide. We want to come together as a community and show that mental illness is treatable, and suicide is preventable. During the month of September, there will be Public Service Announcements (PSA’s) that were created to target high risk groups within Berks County. The message we hope to convey to those contemplating suicide is they are not alone and there are resources in the community for them to reach out and seek help.
A special thank you to Threshold Rehabilitation Services, Inc. for their donation to the task force from the Threshold ruOK? 5K and 1.5 Mile Walks making these benches possible.
